Two days, two cities, two different groups of people united by a common commitment to the Public Sector and their desire to make it the best it can be. In both cases collaboration and innovation really were the take home messages.
Yesterday in Cardiff I was privileged to be part of the #financefuture17 conference chaired by the Auditor General for Wales with the aim of inspiring and equipping the leaders of tomorrow. My session on 'the Challenges of Public Sector Leadership' picked up themes of complexity, collaboration and resilience. But I wasn't alone in highlighting these issues.
Rob Whiteman, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, also picked up the challenges of working in a complex environment. He said: "Siloism is the enemy of the public. We need to break down barriers and have systems leadership."
Zoe Sweet, Director of Organisational Development at Academi Wales, put the issue of resilience at the forefront of her workshop 'Personal Resilience and Mental Toughness'. The question of whether the responsibility to design in resilience lies with individuals or organisations is something I've been pondering recently, so I'm looking forward to reading 'Developing Resilience Organizations' by Doug Strycharczyk.
And today, in London, the brilliant #oneteamgov hosted an 'unconference' bringing together a great range of Senior Civil Servants to 'reimgaine' the future of Public Services. John Manzoni, Chief Executive of the Civil Service, said that it was about "crossing boundaries and mobilizing a collective energy." Antonia Romeo, Permenant Secretary at DIT, was also extolling the virtues of collaboration, learning and listening.
It really is true - if you want to go far you have to go together. Public Sector Leaders need to learn how to collaborate and make it count.
